Homonormativity & Queer Youth Resistance

This chapter explores how the institutionalization of a gay identity reproduces some of the same oppressive and limiting specifications from which the gay liberation movement has sought freedom.

Description

This chapter explores how the institutionalization of a gay identity reproduces some of the same oppressive and limiting specifications from which the gay liberation movement has sought freedom. The concept of homonormativity will be discussed as a result of neo-liberal and assimilationist identity politics that maintain regulating effects on queer youth. A discursive therapy practice informed by post-structural and queer theories will be applied to work with a transgender youth as a practice to deconstruct these specifications.
